Any old battery will not work in an I-eloop system, as I'm sure you know now, because the Q85 battery is the only one strong enough to channel the power of braking energy (kinetic energy) into electrical energy which is then stored in the both capacitor and the battery. Any other battery will swell up because there's too much power. Mazda quit using this system because of the cost to the consumer. Almost.every Japanese company has experimented with it, but it only works there because of how their government requires them to care for their cars.
Any AGM battery can handle this and many people have used them right here on the forum. They have extremelylow internal resistance which is the key parameter for charge acceptance in this sort of use.

I had the issue back in mid-2019....the car was 4 years old (got it in 2015) and had a little under 50k miles when the Battery Management light came on. Searched all around and decided to go with the AGM technology. The Q85 battery technology seemed inferior to what was being offered in the AGM's from Optima, Bosch, Northstar, etc. Also, if the technology was so special 50k and 4 years is terrible for a battery. Seems like there are a few more companies today promoting AGM batteries. Specifically, I installed a Northstar NSB-AGM35 which I think has been discontinued but replaced by their Odyssey brand. It was rated at 900 cycled to 50%. Has worked perfectly for the last 3 years.
My head hurts because I think I was able to follow that extended information download a little bit. Sounds like a dont “ have to” pay the dealership $500. I can get an AMG BATTERY from AutoZone.
Yes. The "EFB" batteries are inferior in terms of internal resistance, charge acceptance and tolerance of depth-of-distance to an AGM. Just buy one of those.
