HOW-TO : Install Side Markers as Turn Signals and Hazard with LEDs on MS6 And Mazda 6

There is an easier way to do this and I know that method exists, but when your lights are on (usually at night) the front and side signals alternate and that bugs me so this is why I created this. It's generally more work than most would like to do. But It's here for all to see...

Here is a link to the easier one: http://forum.mazda6club.com/electrical/135862-how-convert-side-markers-turn-signal-10.html

This is for changing your side markers into turn signals/hazards in your Mazda 6 or MS6 (2006-2008) while the lights are off or if they are on...as far as I know. Enjoy!

MazdaSPEED 6 Side Marker Mod - YouTube

Tools Required:
- Various Socket Wrenches
- Screwdrivers
- Pliers
- Zip-Ties
- The complete flasher circuit with splices (I don’t have a how to on building it but I am showing pictures of the wiring diagram and a final cable picture on the 1st step
- A decent amount of wire to get around the engine bay to get to the two different locations for where the side markers are

1. Here is the wiring diagram and some version of my cable, it is here to give you an idea (Your wire colors will probably differ from mine and you should most likely label them or write them down somewhere when you build it. But for the sake of this HOW-TO, I will be referencing my wire colors.

2. Start with the driver side of the car and remove the whole fuse panel by your left foot and the step guard piece. When you get those two pieces off you should see something like this (minus the spliced wires, I’m too lazy to remove my mod to show a picture of before I started)

3. Feed the cable through this grommet to the other side, so that you can wind it around the engine bay to connect to the side marker connectors

4. Next you will connect the different wires to their respective locations at this fuse area: I will state what is the car wire color first then the cable wire color)

Connect the WHITE/RED STRIPE to the WHITE/RED
Connect the WHITE/BLACK STRIPE to the WHITE/BLUE
Connect LIGHT GREEN/BLACK STRIPE to the BLACK wire that is spliced to the RED (I ran out of wire so i had to add wire to make it to the cable)
Connect GREEN/BLACK STRIPE to PURPLE
Connect GREEN/ORANGE STRIPE to BROWN
Connect GREEN/WHITE STRIPE to BLUE
Connect BLUE/ORANGE STRIPE to PINK
Connect RED/GREEN STRIPE to GREEN/YELLOW

5. Next find a place to mount the relays as shown… they don’t have to be all together but It makes it easier…

6. The last wire that comes from the cable is the two black wires that go from the relays through the grommet that will eventually get to the two turn signals.
Make sure you mark which one is the left and which one is the right. Personally I cut one wire longer than the other and just remembered. I used a cable that didn’t mark a positive and negative or colors to blend easier.
When you get to the connector on the left turn signal cut the GREEN/RED STRIPE wire and crimp or solder this onto the end. Since it’s on the outside you will want to wrap it in some electrical take to protect it from the elements.

7. Route it around your car above the radiator to the other turn signal area. Repeat the wiring to the right turn signal. GREEN/RED STRIPE for the right side as well.

8. Plug in the lights and test the functionality.

DISCLAIMER: This is not an easy HOW-TO….it was more of something I wanted to do for myself. But it got interest from others so do it at your own risk. If you have questions ask me first. Thanks!

a related question...

Nice write up OP. On a related note, I'm considering installing a set of LED mirrors on my '06 6s HB, and always figured there was an easier way to wire them up besides running a wire all the way to the headlights? Seeing I know you tapped the front flasher outputs for your relay assembly, might you be kind enough to post just the wires needed to wire up my LED mirrors. It'd be MUCH easier to tap the flasher outputs at the car's fuse box than to snake a pair of wires all the way to the headlights.

Thanks in advance...

no problem.

all you need is the following:

Connect the WHITE/BLACK STRIPE to the left turn signal negative (-)

Connect the WHITE/RED STRIPE to the right turn signal negative (-)

Connect LIGHT GREEN/BLACK STRIPE to left and right turn signal positive (+)

let me know if that works for you...that should be correct.

good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. I will READILY admit I'm not an electrical engineer. That being said, it appears as though your instructions indicated to hook up the ground wires for both LEDs to the GREEN/Black wire, which by your diagram is a +12V ACC feed. I'm confused???

ahh i see where your confusion lies. When I wrote the original wiring diagram, it was noted that those was for the turn signals but i soon found out those were actually pulled to ground (0V) when activated. They are 12V initially when no turn signal is on and that's why they are labeled such.

The circuit i posted reads that the two turn signal wires are in fact the ground wires that need to go to the black wire of your side mirror leds

and

the green and black wire (+12V ACC) is for the red wire and yes they are tied together.

It can be a little confusing and I should prob refresh that drawing to a more accurate one (wiring is correct the labels are a bit confusing), but for now I hope this helps!
