My 2016 only has 62k miles and the rear brakes are making grinding noises, so I’m thinking it needs new pads. That seems soon compared to other vehicles I’ve owned, and I’ve never had to replace fears before fronts.

How long did the factory rear pads last on your M6?

Pull the wheels and have a look; you might have a stuck slider on one side and thus have chewed up a pad there. "How soon" has a lot to do with your driving cycle and use (e.g. city .vs. highway miles); 62k miles is not terribly early depending on your drive cycle and style. These cars seem to "eat" the pads at about the same rate; the VW in my driveway chews through two rear sets in the time one front set lasts but Mazda appears to be better-balanced in that regard.

Mazdas, from at least one point, are harder on the rears due to the mandated stability control. It uses the rears to straighten the car up if it gets out of driving spec.

My fronts on my 2016 Sport MTX lasted 40K miles, the rears 60K miles. I replaced them both with the Wagner ceramics--lifetime warranty. Fronts have about 75K miles on them and are getting close to needing replacement, probably another 5K miles.
