Hi everyone, I recently brought my 2004 Mazda6 2.3 into the dealership for 2 reasons, 1) I was burning oil fast and 2) a CEL was showing. I knew that the CEL was due to the purge control valve, but the main reason I brought it in was to figure out why I was burning oil so fast. I suggested that the PCV valve may be the issue.

So after bringing it in, I get a call from the dealership saying that I was right about the purge control valve and they cleaned out my PCV valve. I asked them if they removed the intake manifold, and the guy who called me (which wasn't the mechanic) said that he didn't believe so. I told him there was no way they could have removed the PCV valve and cleaned it if they didn't remove the intake manifold (I tried to to this myself with another ex-mechanic before we found out its PIA location). The guy told me he would check with the mechanic. Turns out they didn't and the guy was trying to explain to me about the mechanic doesn't think the PCV valve is the issue because he checked the oil separator. I don't know about cars that much so I got a little lost when he was explaining the role of the oil separator to me. They also told me there would be no guarantee that after their done it my car won't continue to burn engine oil. I called bull****, since I'm spending several hundred dollars I better get an answer to what the problem is if they can't fix it.

Anyway, can anyone please explain what the Oil separator does? This whole situation just seems a little shady to me especially after they told me they cleaned the PCV valve without removing the intake manifold. Also any suggestions to avoid being screwed over by the dealership? Much thanks.

Welcome to the real world. Right now you're paying for labour time to diagnose an issue, which is completely valid.

Theoretically, they are the THE people to take your car to if you've got a technical issue. After all, they are the Mazda specialists. However, if they diagnose it as one problem, fix it and it ends up being several related problems, they can't be responsible for what those other problems are unless you want to pay them to fix those as well.

the best thing you could do is make sure you go back to the dealer when speaking with them so they can put the info in the computer so you can get a printout from them showing what they said and when they said it so you are still covered under your warranty
