Towed it to dealer last night.

OF COURSE started right up for them. They'll take a look at it but WTF!!

Last Night - Ignition would turn all the way to starting position... but i had no clicking noise, and it would not even try to turn over. All lights, gauges, AIR, and sound worked fine... just would not even try to fire up.
I checked all the fuses, no issue. Disconnected the battery and let it sit for a minute... nothing. So i had it towed.

When left on in accessory mode last night eventually the CEL would start blinking at ... i had never seen that before... the car has been throwing lean in engine bank one, an ongoing issue. I do not see this causing a no start though.

^^^^ DOOD!!!! the exact same thing happened to me last night! Towed it there spent half the night dealing with this bull cause I didn't have CAA/AAA.....

my issue apparently was a corroded negative terminal, i thought it was the battery/starter but still its balls.

have a look to see if the symptoms are the same....

Dealer has not called me back yet.

It didn't turn over at all, right?

But started fine later...

So, more than likely a few of these things:

Starter relay going bad
Starter solenoid going bad
Starter Motor going bad
Clutch Switch going bad
Open circuit in the conductors between

Last night it did not even try to turn over.

Dealer said everyting checked out, they had no issues starting at all today... from 0800 - 1630 or so when they finally pulled it in.

I asked specifically about the clutch switch and asked them to check connections. There were no codes stored aside from the battery haveing low volt. But i probably wore it down trying to start repeatedly last night. They tested it and it was fine.

So... i get to have the joy of crossing my fingers every time i get in the car, and a 80 dollar tow bill.

this used to happen to me because of the nasty negative wire... I just bought another batt cable from oreilys, screwed it in the stock bolt location with the stock cable, havent had a problem since.

Make sure your terminals/cables are cleaned and tight.

His sig says its a grand touring, thats why I meantioned it.

No starts can be such a PITA to diag.
Well thats an easy test for the OP,

Just use the traditional key. Its should start up every time. Though he said his gauges work, the car wouldn't turn. They key doesn't need more "juice" to turn the car over. Its just a proximity key. If it were low, he would not get anything from the gauges. If the gauges come on that means the solenoid or whatever that allows it to turn turned.

If you say your terminals are good and battery is stable then honestly check the fuel pump or starter. You can hear it pump fuel (whine) every time you turn the key to accessory. Just roll down your window and turn it to accessory 20 times and listen each time. If it doesn't do it that could be your issue.

I had a similar issue with a sunfire. Sometimes start sometimes no. When it didn't I didn't get any turn over but the gauges worked. If I hit the pump then it would work.

Security part of the GT keyless is a passive RF chip in the actual emergency key head that's in/ slides out of the remote. Battery is for remote functions only. Additionally, would have been repeatable by dealer troubleshooting.

Based on description of symptoms, I'd look at clutch safety switch or a binding starter motor the next time the issue presents. Clutch switch is just a connection being made, starter will just need to be whacked a few times to release.

GL with it, troubleshooting intermittent issues sucks since you often can't do a whole lot till it shows up. Typically not at a convenient time...

Considering it has happened to others in the past, my vote goes to the clutch safety switch.
Just bypass it and be done with it.

I have to whack the starter on my truck more and more often now. It is a timeless quick fix, which would explain how our resident geezer suggests it. Lol!!

If you bypass your switch, that is just one thing to knock off the list...

Thanks to all. Most helpful. Had it since Friday started with no issue multiple times. I will plan to bypass clutch switch, and remove one of the rabbits feet from my key chain.

I didn't even think to try starting with a key actually in the ignition! What a weird concept! Been spoiled.

I LOL'd @ Groceries :D :D

The starter is indeed a timeless one- I kept a hammer in my Toyota 4x4 for that one specific reason only :)

It's really a symptom, and the fix is to either replace or disassemble & clean the starter.

I've had my clutch switch bypassed with a piece of paperclip for years- ever since Forzda1 went off on a tangent about bearing wear during start-up. Watching folks ask why their car stalls when they release their clutch after a cold start every winter just reinforces the benefit

strange to find this thread. this happened to me 2 days ago... i checked everything NOTHING. couldnt get her to start up. finally i jack up the car find the starter and hit it with a wrench... Car starts right up. I just ordered a new starter from advanced auto and will be picking it up tomorrow to change. has anyone swapped this before?? it looks like i have to remove the intake manifold to change it out??? what a pain in the ass for a starter...

I suspect that as the Speed6's age, starter issues will be more common. It would be most generous if you could grab some pics as you do your swap and post a How-To on swapping the starter.

The IM removal has been done a few times, so you could easily just link one of those, and then add the steps for the starter.

I know it's not a rocket science job- remove wires, remove starter, install starter, attach wires. Still, it will be an adventure for many folks, and pics go a long way towards making things less scary :)

Hi everyone, I went through this last year. My starter motor started to intermittently fail. Sometimes it would start just fine and other times it would flat out be dead. Of course there was power to everything and I could physcially turn the ignition knob. I had to push start the car a couple of times because I would have been stranded.

I did replace the starter motor and it fixed things right up. I removed the intake manifold to get to it. Once the manifold is off, it's a snap. My starter lasted for about 150,000 miles so not all that surprised it was failing!

Mine was a bad ground wire from the battery replaced that and it fired right back up...
