I am in the process of purchasing a 2009 i Grand Touring A/T. I have a question/concern about the RPM's while driving at higher speeds (highway). I noticed I was going 65 MPH and the RPM's were at near 2,500. That seems quite high to me. I also own an 09 Camry (also a 4 cyl 5 speed automatic) and the RPM's don't hit 2500 until going 80 MPH. Is this normal?

Why does this seem high? I have a 2010 i Touring, 2.5L, with 7,300 miles. On the highway, b/w 70-90 miles, the RPM reaches 3,000 - 3,500, and it's steady at this point... It revs to 4,000 and beyond with accelerating speeds. I though this was normal, been experiencing this from day one of the car. Am I experiencing the same issues as you?

OK, thanks for the information. I guess the Camry is just set up differently. I am just surprised how much higher the RPM's are, but if that is what is normal then OK. what kind of gas mileage are you getting?

Average on the highway is 31, in the city I get about 22.

RPMs- gearings

While it's normal for the Mazda6 - it's higher than avearge RPMS for most 4 cyl cars in it's class (non-turbo/non DI). In my mind the gearing at least on my manual 6th gear should have been higher for highway cruising at those speeds so I could get better mileage.

^^^that is what I figured. I have driven a few other 4 cyl the past few years and this car gearing is set up almost like a 3 speed..but if that is normal (never had a Mazda before) then that is ok. heard/read lots of great things about this car. I picked it up today. I really like it.:)

I got a 2009 Mazda 6 I Touring with Automatic gearbox. I notice that if I drive 60miles/hour by myself, the RPM is around 2,100. When I use cruise control to drive at same speed(60miles/hour), the RPM is going higher around 2,500. Anyone has same result?

I have a 2010 6 I touring and noticed this issue about 6 months. Basically whats happening is if you use cruise in the 55-65mph range the torque converter does not stayed locked, causing rise in RPM's. It will randomly lock/unlock. This causes significant reduction in gas mileage. I only use cruise control on interstate(70) because of this, very annoying.

I reported it to dealership, and they filed issue with Mazda. Went to dealership today actually to check up on it. He said they talked with Mazda and it is because of torque management on 4cyl. The guy said you test drove 2011 6 I and it has same issue. I'm not holding my breath on this getting resolved. It sucks because if you drive yourself at these speeds, the torque converter locks, just not in cruise mode. It sucks even more that most people probably aren't aware of this issue, and are hurting their gas mileage putting cruise control on the highway.

2009 Mazda 6 cruise control runs engine 100 rpms faster

I purchased a new 2009 Mazda6 2.5 for my wife in July of 09. It has 41k and tonight is the first time I noticed the higher RPM when using cruise control. It averages 28mpg on the highway but never better than 29. I am going on a road trip tomorrow and will use "foot" not "cruise". I hope to see an increase in mpg by keeping the engine from revving up when cruise is locked on. I would think Mazda could do a programing modification to correct this issue.

UPDATE: Took the car on 120 mile trip (120 one way). On the way there I used my foot to control speed on 55 mph roads. On roads 65 mph I was able to use the cruise it held steady at 2400 RPM and 69 mph.
The round trip was the first that I did not PUSH the Mazda above speed limits. I averaged 33 mpg down and 34 mpg back. This 2.5 is much more efficient at posted speed limits.

The cruise is ok above 68 mph but not below it.
