Reading Topic: Gear Ratios

I know there is no such thing as a stupid question but....

What do these numbers mean? I'm not exactly Mr. mechanic and I don't pay attention to gear ratio numbers - If I like how a car drives that's what matters.

So when it states that 1st gear ratio for the 4-cyl automatic is 2.816 what does this mean to me??

Thanks for the education.

Thanks LBJay.

So, essentially what this tells me is that at the same engine rpm the wheels of the 4-cyl have to turn more often than in the v6 because each wheel revolution in the v6 is more powerful. Something like that.

Interesting. Almost too much for my non-mechanical brain.

I think I'll stick with driving what feels good as I always have. When my dad had a Regal Grand National in '87 I certainly didn't know anything about gear ratios - I just knew that I was the luckiest 16 year old in Toronto!
