I've searched and read everything regarding the air box mod and I plan on doing the mod tomorrow, but before I do it I was wondering if fuel efficiency is at all effected by gutting the air box?

Also, can I have some final opinions on whether to follow the how-to completely and take everything out or if I should leave the tuba or any other parts in because I'd read mixed reviews on what should and shouldn't be taken out while doing the air box mod.

Technically, yes, you do lose gas (a SMALLLL amount) honestly who cares? . Its sounds deeper, louder than stock, you can argue it gives you a lil HP gain, (i dont think it does IMO) and it draws attention (which is probably why you did it in the first place)

for the person that wants to do this mod and not cough up the couple hundred for a quality CAI will probably become heavy footed and act like they actually have one. that accounts for 98% of the extra gas loss.

Anyone disagree?

I agree that it's the heavy footedness ( is that even a word? :laugh: ) of the driver after the mod that wastes the gas. I know because I am one of them. I've heard many things also and the only thing I was told to leave on was the tuba. Although I doubt it will matter either way. I would honestly do what I did and pick up a true CAI if you actually want hp and torque gains. But for now the box mod does give you the aggressive sound of a CAI.

In theory you should get better gas milage, as the car is getting colder denser air, there for burning the gas more completly.

I agree in that I should go for the CAI eventually. But I don't want to get one unless I get the CPE MAFci, so I'm waiting on that and just trying the air box mod as an experiment really. So far I like what I hear, but I did take all the parts off, including the tuba, flapper, and tray. Would anyone recommend putting any of those three parts back on?

I am interested in this as well as I did the Mod 2-3 weeks ago. Also can you turn the Tuba downwards? would that catch cooler air?

Not really. If you don't have fogs than drill slot the panel. That would allow the outside air to directly hit the filter. It will also make it sound louder. Its free and might get u an extra hp MAYBE. People aren't doing this mod for gains or cooler air, their doing it for the sound. Just do the mod the way its diagram'd out. Cooler air comes with the CAI. AEM gets the most gain for the money I've been told but I always liked injen.

I have gotten slightly better gas mileage all around on my V6 since doing the mod. Sound smuch better too. Have a K&N panel filter coming to add to the mix until Spring, at which point I'll get a proper CAI.

I did the mod and found that if I control myself and don't stomp on it I gain maybe 2 extra mpg...but thats not really fun. Otherwise even with seeming to stomp on it more, for the sound, my gas mileage is fairly consistent. I'm getting roughly 24 to 25 mpg with about 4800 miles on the car.

Well I can't comment on the mod for mileage gains because I haven't done it and have no plans to, but can tell you that just putting the K&N replacement filter in does absolutely zip, zero, zilch, nada for gas mileage improvement.
It's nice to know I won't have to buy new paper air filters anymore but if you're buying one thinking it will give you better mileage then save your money.
It also does slightly increase the noise from the intake. Any more and I'd probably take it back out, as I'm an old fart who actually enjoys the quietness of my car. :zzz:

I went with injen. Its been said you do get a slightly better gain with aem but a member got a cel. I've had the injen for almost 3 months and never got a cel. The cp-e will give you the most gain but its not cheap.

Very true, that's what I was worried about with the AEM, since you haven't gotten a CEL with your Injen, do you have a link for where you might have gotten yours since I'm sure you found a good deal on it.
