I own a 2007 Mazda 6i. For the past few days i have been able to ONLY use the manumatic mode to proceed from a stop. First gear does not engage in full-auto mode (i.e. feels exactly the same as having the engine in neutral) but works fine in manumatic mode. For example, every time I come to a stop sign, I have to switch to manumatic mode to pull away. Also, I can slightly hear a faint whine coming from my engine/ATX when in in full-auto first gear.

Any ideas on what is wrong with my transmission and/or engine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I took it to the dealer, said that they needed to replace the entire transmission. It sounds a little drastic knowing that all 5 gears function properly in "manumatic" mode. I thought it was just "shift solenoid A" malfunctioning (according to the Workshop Manual) but I do not have the tools to get the correct error codes off my car to confirm my suspicion. Hope this works.

Anyone know how much a transmission replacement will cost? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

check out car-parts.com for an idea on used trans. it does sound more tcm related than hardparts if you can make the trans due it with the manual controls. are you out of warranty?

Car is fine now. Took it to dealership and they replaced the transmission. However, when they test drove it they said that the car would "stall" in fourth gear. Then they blamed the new problem on the battery ("loose ground cable"). They replaced the battery and tried to make me pay for it (approx. $142). I argued for about 15mins that my battery broke while in their possession and they soon surrendered and let me go without paying for the battery.

Extended Warranty: $2500
Me: $500
Battery Free

Only bring up payment concerns after you car is already fixed.
