engine stalling out

Im having a problem here and i'd appreciate any advice on this issue. When I started my car in the morning everything was fine but then later in the day I started the car and the rpms went up to about 1000 and then jumped down to 0 and stalled out. Then I would wait a couple seconds and try to start the car again and it would work completely normally. This happened 3 seperate times today when I tried to start the car. Also, for the past week i've been noticing a really weird noise coming from the rear of the car. I cant tell exactly where its coming from but its coming from near the rear wheels, and I dont think its the brakes because i just got new ones about 1 month ago. Thanks in advance for any help.

I would get the fuel pressure checked? It may be the fuel pump going bad. What does the weird noise sound like?example......grinding,whislte,clunk,etc???
Would the fuel pump go bad at 16,000 miles? The noise sounds like whistling.
It could, stranger things have happened. The strainer on the bottom of the fuel pump sometimes gets plugged up with contaminants and can overheat the pump causing failure. It's not as uncommon as you might think.

Anything and everything can and will happen. Murphys Law :)

If you take it to a shop you will probably want to wait till it is less intermittent that way they don't spend your money trying to verify the symptom.

Not sure about your noise, could be the pump. Abnormal fuel pressure will not make the engine race and then stall, it could cause a non start or rich condition but not usually an abnormal idle at this low of mileage.

I would bet my paycheck the Idle Air Control Motor is bad. That is purely just an educated guess from the way you described it, mainly you need to get it checked when it acts up more often.

Good Luck
Is the whistling noise constant and do you hear it for about 3 seconds when you first turn the key to the 'on' position? (Not start) If so, that is probably your fuel pump making the noise.

Last I checked, we don't have an IAC motor... the electronic TB obsoletes this circuit/system on the 2.3L. ;) The TB is monitored pretty closeley by the computer so if it messes up, you'll usually get a CEL.

Yah your right sorry bout that, I've been all over today :) Forgot that mazda does this. Definetely makes a more difficult diagnosis.....

For a stall we need to know what we are losing that makes an engine run. We need Spark, Fuel/Air, Compression. We can rule out compression it wouldn't normally be intermittent especially at this mileage. Intermittent are tough, might have to wait till it won't start.
