first thought is why are you using 89? it's designed for 87, so as long as it's good gas you should be using 87.

valves in the car are VERY loud, sure it's not them? how do you know it's "knock"

i have the advanced timing mod thought I had to use 89 and yea pretty much sounds like a "knock knock knock knock" but goes away about 2000rpms and when its warmed up it goes away, i been working for a dealership for like 5 years now and to me it sounds like a knocking motor but i know if it waas a knock it would be constant

with the timing mod, gas is good, so no worried there.

as far as the knock goes, there's rod knock which is realy no bueno...then theres "knock" which people use to explain ping/detonation. as you said, knock typically won't go away with engine rpm/temp....just gets worse with speed. and detonation at low load is pretty hard to do as well...so kind of at an impass.

why not ask the guys at the dealer to have a listen? my 6 was always loud, and when swapping the top end components it just got louder. my miata has a ticking sound until it warms up, then goes away.

yea i did they're not sure either, i work for mitsubishi so they're arent familiar with mazda they said maybe valve adjustment or timeing so idk, might take it to mazda for a diag but i just may be crazy cuz im sure u know if u have a knock it doesnt go away with temp and rpm as u say I might be just paranoid, i maintain it well and completly anal about shit with it so idk

meet up with some local owners, see if their cars sound the same. there were some local guys that thought mine was jacked, and all i did was take off the engine cover. engine is damn loud, and it's all valvetrain.

i would hold off on Mazda until you have a chance to check out some local ones

Hi, Dem Pho,

I had the same noise in my 6i as well, I took it to the dealer several months back, and they told me it was injector noise. However, it is very apparent when feathering the throttle between 1500rpm and holding it steady around 2000rpm.

Ive heard a few other 6i's and Mazda 3's with similar sounds, and I think it is really just the norm for MZR motors.

yeah that's what I'm gathering. I noticed on Jegs.com that there is a belt tensioner that is supposed to alleviate that problem apparently for good? Being that the part is only 60 bucks and installation probably wouldn't be too much of a nightmare it might be worth considering.
