Here's the situation:
My negative battery cable was a bit corroded so I cleaned it and added some terminal grease. However, I also noticed it was a bit loose. So, for the past couple weeks occasionally I have to adjust the cable for it make solid enough contact for the car to start. Then, yesterday, my car died on I-5 south, in 5th gear, 65 MPH, and 3k RPMs. I noticed something was up when I tried to give it some gas but got no response. Then I noticed I had no power steering. So, I pulled over to the shoulder (unfortunately lefthand, given the dire situation) and tried to troubleshoot - hoping it wasn't something major. I played with the loose cable a bit and tried to start the car again. No matter the position of the cable, the engine would try to turn over but would not start. Eventually, it would not even try to turn over - I figure I drained the battery in all this. I got it towed back to the house and tried to jump it today. With the other car on and cables connected, it ALMOST starts. The engine starts to kick on, but fails immediately.
I have a AAA battery that's been working fine for a couple years now. When my cable was corroded, the battery tested fine at 14V. So....think it's the battery, alternator, or something else?
