I reverted back... i dont think it changed the temp at all to be honest.. maybe its a pointless mod in 120* heat, lol.

:headscrat:

Maybe i said that wrong... Ok when i first did it i remember a warning about the TB freezing in low temps.

SO i was asking about what temperature range should i worry about it freezing over, and/or which month would one revert back to normal in fear if the freezing..

as for the mod validility, I like it. SHes more freee placebo or not.

you've got a couple pound chunk of metal that's no longer being heated up to 200 degrees. Even after long drives I've been able to put my hand on my TB and it's warm, sometimes hot, but nothing close to what it used to be. It's one thing that's cooler underneath the hood.

I've never heard of anyone's throttle plate sticking open because of this. It's a possibility, yes, but the probability is extremely low.

Either do it don't. It's like an intake: there really is no point in having an in-length discussion because it's just an intake.

Alright, I think we need something to link people to when they ask the questions about how to do the TB Coolant Bypass mod and that damn Intake Air Hose thing to the crank case. Or whatever it is.

Throttle Body Coolant Bypass

What you'll need:
(1x) 3/8ths Hose union by Quick Disconnect
(2x) 3/8ths hose clamps

Hose unions are made by Quick Disconnect and are part number 800-011

Tools:
Needle Nose Pliers
An awesome screwdriver!
Some badass muscles of doom (maybe)

And then follow these steps:

So easy! It really helps a lot as the TB is a decent sized chunk of metal. Not having it heat up to a billion degrees not only helps underhood temperatures (errr, right?) but it'll make sure the TB isn't heating the air up before entering the engine and potentially robbing you of some power. What I like about it even more than that, however, is the fact that it won't bleed heat into/onto the intake pipe. Big difference on the temperature of the intake piping after being run hard.

Intake Air Hose/Crank Case Thingie

What you'll need:
(1x) 3/8ths Hose union by Quick Disconnect
(2x) 3/8ths Hose clamps
(2x) 5/8ths Hose Clamps
(3ft) 3/8ths Hose
(1ft) 5/8ths Hose

Tools:
An awesome screwdriver!
Your sexy self!

And then follow these steps:

The oem black/light blue plastic piece on the crank case is a bitch. Just treat it like one and break it. Show how we 6 clubbers roll, ya know? Anyways, 1ft of 5/8ths is plenty, and 3ft has proven to be plenty as well, but no one is stopping you from purchasing more than that. I'd suggest it, actually, simply because you'll always need some new hose for a new project somewhere down the line. The quick disconnect hose unions come two to a pack and cost about $7 from what I can remember.

So basically, if you're getting an intake, you're probably going to have to do this crank case thingie but while you're at it, just go ahead and do the TB Coolant Bypass mod as well. It's well worth it, in my opinion.

Now stop pm-ing me!!! ;D[/b]
hey, as you know im rebuilding my engine and while its being rebuilt, im PnP the heads, putting the new mounts, getting the optimized TB, and im even boring my engine (only 0.0040 though). i was wondering if this mod worked with the 03 mtx 6i? the only mod ive done to the car was the intake and i regret it now but hey, if i have the engine apart im going to do as much as i can to it. haha. but do you know if it will work? on second thought, will it work witht the optimized TB or will i even want to use it?

liike you'll hear often, they dealer has to prove it's an issue to be a warranty issue. given, it can't stop them from bitching.

i'd also say that this is one of those easy mods that can be reversed if desired and you lose $5 tops, so can't hurt. i will say the only reason i have mine done is because my TB gets removed so often that it's just dump to have to worry about the hoses all the time. we were swapping TB's at the track a couple years back between cars, as i do it all the time....then i realized he hadn't done it and it turned into a hot bitch ass job to do on the fly...so yeah, that's my thought.

I had to revert back due to my gas mileage dropped HORRIBLY. I know the winter mix fuel will make a difference, but I was barely getting 20mpg. On road trips i'd barely get 25. Reverted back and now am getting 26-27 in the City and over 32mpg on the highway. I guess it works great for warmer climates or summer months, but during the wintery months it must need that extra warmth.

During the Summer i got as high as 36mpg on a road trip with the TB Collant Bypass Mod.

2006 6i ATX 32,XXX miles.

i would honestly think that it would be the opposite, let alone i wouldn't imagine a change in mpg that could be notice my much at all.

What might be happening is, as most are doing mods for minor hp gains and not for mpg, you will use more gas with the colder/denser air, which does provide more power, but would in turn use more fuel. i would imagine that putting it back to stock, which would make a noticable difference in mpg as you stated, would also make a noticable drop in hp if the difference is as much as you've stated? given, if there's snow on the ground, it might be hard to tell period.

just might thoughts, no factuals here.....like to hear other input on it thugh

so do you guys think this mod could some how trigger a CEL because of the intake air temperature sensor?? meaning, do you guys think that this mod could mess up the IAT sensor?

edit-
the reason i ask is because i have that CEL and took it to a family mechanic. he looked at the TB and was like, what is supposed to go here?? i told him the mod and he said that the mod could be causing the trouble in my engine because of the exact temps or something like that

well, i'm sure there's a good 50-100+ people that have done this mod, and no one has complained about a CEL, so i highly doubt it. The IAT on this car is build into the MAF, so what happens behind the MAF wouldn't matter really at all (if you have no leaks).

It seems that so many people are concerned about "should I do this" and "will my butterfly valve freeze in the winter" and "should this mod be seasonal" when no one is really thinking about solutions to the problem.

Do the mod.

It's not that hard to connect a 3-way brass valve to the hose to give you the flexibility of deciding when you want coolant running through your TB. All it would take is a flip of the switch under the hood and you now have coolant running back through your TB. And when it warms up outside, another flip of the switch, and "Hey, my TB is dry and running a lot cooler now!"

You can find something different/better, but here is something like what you would need. And it would only cost a few more bucks.

Airplanes use the similar technology, usually called a Vernatherm. It is a valve that, depending on oil temperature, will divert the oil to keep the engine running at optimal.

DONT DO THIS MOD

if you like ok gas mileage do not do the TB coolant bypass. it kills it... and it really doesnt help any preformance at all[/b]
i think you have something else wrong.

how did you even come to the conclusion it was the TBCB?

I dropped my mileage quite a bit. this mod is for gas mileage as well I went to my local autozone had a talk with a very knowledgeable guy there before I was going to do this mod. he said "GM started running coolant threw the TB as a air warmer for fuel economy". I didnt believe him but after I did the bypass I didnt really notice a mileage drop til I drove a 400 mile route I usually take every month and noticed I got about 100 miles less on a full tank. so I switched it back and everything was back to normal. the performance for me wasnt enough to kill the mileage of the car. it did feel a little more responsive. but in the end it really isnt worth it.
