updates are typically smaller things that have nothing to do with placement for the most part. Could be a new manufacturer and casting is a bit different sometimes. should still be fine with the swap and you'll have to play the sandwhich plate by ear, though there are shorter filters available as well from WIC/K&N/etc.

Yup, what he said. Couple PNs you could cross-reference if need be for the spin on:
Wix 51348
Motorcraft FL793

My local Allied auto parts store has Wix cheap so i get them there

you really cant mess it up.
Oh, i'm sure someone could! just be sure to not over-tighten the bolts (going into aluminum). A good idea to scrape the remaining gasket material off from the block where the stocker came off. As stated, it's not all that difficult

Mazda sold me the wrong parts, firetrucking njfhbfh. so mad. I know this makes me look like a fool but the story needs to be told.
I picked up the parts from mazda on friday, this morning i started to take the old oil filter adapter apart. Drained the oil and took the old housing off. Took the new one out of the box to realize that they sold me the exact same part and not the spin-on filter conversion like they said it was gonna be. Put the old adapter back on to make it easier to take the cartridge filter cap off, only to find out that i cannot find the right tool anywheres, except probably mazda whos parts and service depart is closed today.
Proceed to remove the housing once again and take it to canadian tire as its the only shop thats open close by today because they wont rent me the tool so i brought it in so that one of their tools could take the cap off for me. Put the new o-rings on and and the new filter in and piece it back together. Get home and tighten up the bolts to secure the housing. Pour my oil in, nothing leaking, turn the car over and run it for 5 mins nothing leaking. Take the car down and for a short drive, nothing leaking. Go for a little cruise around town, cme back home parked the car and notice that its seeping oil. Take it to Canadian Tire, they check the filter cap for me again and its secure but im still losing oil.

Its been a long day and im super pissed and feel absolutly defeated, I thought this was gonna be an easy little project and it woulda been if I hadda been sold the right parts.

Lesson learned today, dont trust anyone and always check the parts before buying them. Assuming that i was getting what i ordered made an a** outta me

yeah man checked the drain plug insured it was secure myself. Also i had tryed two different filter wrenchs that are essential meant to unscrew the cap and both would just slip and wouldnt grip the cap. The mechanic i was talking to says it might be something to do with the gasket from the adapter. but i cleaned it and put a light film of oil on it like ya should. bolts are secure. not over tight but snug. Also macdonalds got my order wrong so its just been a bad day. ha

McDonalds got your order wrong? That's it! That's crossing the line! LMAO. :) Just playing man.

I had a hell of a time getting the stupid fucking cartridge of. I tried a 75 mm and 76 mm, filter wrench, one was slightly too small and the other slightly too big. Mazda, being as.... "special" as they are requires a 75.6 MM cartridge wrench. Haha.

But if you really put the leverage on it with a 76mm one, you can usually get it off.

damn thing kept slipping, anyways its on there but im still seeping oil once the engine warms up to running temperature. thinking the gasket maybe? this thing in the morning im giving mazda a blast and hopefully get the right kit thus time. Im concerned about the oil, I know i'll have to drain it to remove the old adapter yet once again to put the right kit on but its brand new oil. Safe to just filter it would ya say?

Yeah man just turned out to be the old gasket so when I got the right kit with new gasket i havent had a problem since. Good to Go...
