its VERY common for the 03-05's to have this problem. you can take it apart. but no one has ever actually been able to fix it themselves. from what i can tell with mine, the contacts that are soldered from the board, to the screen got over heated, and cause them to separate. so assuming all the other 03-05's have the same issue as mine. anyone with good soldering skills should be able to fix it.

other wise you just have to replace the unit. there like $300 from mazda. or your only other option is finding a used one off ebay or from a junkyard. but i will warn you. ive now bought 2 used screens off ebay that were specifically listed for the 03-05's. and they both ended up being for the 06-08's. which do not work on the 03-05's.

Loose Plug ?

When mine was not displaying the temperature and something else, I took it to the place that intalled my CD aftermarket stereo and they said there was a loose 2 prong plug behind the stereo.

Loose plug

At least I didn't have to pay for them finding the loose plug !!! And later I got a good deal on a 46" LED TV.

Hi Guys,

My first post! WOOOOT!

I am a first time Mazda owner and have now had mine for just over 24 hours!

Must say that it is one of the best rides I have EVER had! And it is my eighth car!!!

Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

I bought my Mazda 6 (2004 - Auto) as is from the dealer.
The one problem I did know about was this display.
In the mornings, it works 100%. Afternoon, after the car has been standing in the sun for a while, the display is totally corrupt and you can't read a thing.
Seams to me like the contacts are bad and expanding apart when the interior warms up.

I have searched this forum, but I could not find anything to do with how to get to and remove the LCD from the dash.

I am very technically inclined and will be able to check for faulty wiring, dry solder joints etc...

So, any help with getting this out would be useful! Pictures would also help.

I want to sort it out this weekend if possible.

Thanks in advance for the help.

OH, If there is no "picture how to" for this "common" fault, then I might just put one together while I do it so others will be able to sort it out.

Thanks flipper66...

So in order to get to the LCD, you basically have to strip the entire dash, starting from the bottom?

DAMN! This could keep me busy for a while!

Fixed by resoldering display pins

Long time occasional lurker, just joined to post this.

I have a 2004 6i with the Bose stereo and over the past year or so, one area on the display gradually went blank, roughly 1.5 letters wide. The rest of the display was ok. I like the idea of baking the solder but I read that solder melts at ~360F and I didn't think baking at 250F as recommended elsewhere would be enough. I was concerned about melting the plastic too.

I had success taking everything apart and resoldering the "pins" on the display. Take the dash apart enough to remove the storage/display piece. Once the radio has been pulled out enough, you only need to remove two screws to pull the storage/display out, then unhook its wire to free it. Next remove the display marked CA-DM4291K by unclipping it from the storage part.

CA-DM4291K is sold as one piece as a replacement part and it's tricky to get apart the first time. Remove its four small screws and it will unsnap.

Remove the display circuit board from the plastic housing and you will see ~50 metal pieces which penetrate the circuit board and send the signal to the display. I held a soldering iron to each pin long enough for the solder to melt and then solidify, for each pin where my display wasn't working. I tried to add a little more solder in some cases; not sure if it worked or not.

I put everything back together and the display was 98% fixed. Sometimes a very thin vertical area doesn't display, usually it does.

Bottom line, resoldering fixed my display, without buying a replacement $300 part. Hope this helps someone else.
