Hey everyone,
I wanted to research but have not found a definitive answer. I wanted to know what defines a GL and GJ.
I have a 2017 Mazda 6 Touring and in my Vin it states that i have a GL1. I do understand that I own a refreshed (facelift) generation but I'm unsure if it has to do with the aesthetics or power plant the vehicles come in.

For example; I used to own a 2012 Honda Accord Coupe. Their variants were CS1 & CS2. CS1 would carry inline 4 engines and CS2 would carry V6 engines.

Any information helps. Thanks!

My understanding is that there is no true mechanical differences between GJ and GL models. The GJ is from 2012-2016 (including the world models) while the GL is from 2016 to present. There was a facelift for 2016 that included improvements to the seats, sound-deadening and a few other things that really shouldn't count that much to the point where a new chassis designation might have been necessary. I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda just ran out of numbers to tack on to GJ and then just moved on to the next designation, GL. No idea why they skipped K, though...

I have a 2016 and I think these are some of the differences... Steering wheel, exterior mirrors, gauges (temp gauge on lower trim), I believe brake hold was added. A lot of manufacturers list 2017 models as 2017 and 2017.5. I think this had to do with some of the safety changes (not sure). Maybe that's the reason for the GJ/GL change? More changes took place from 2015-2016 and from 2017-2018, compared to 2016-2017, so it does seem odd the nomenclature would change for 2017.
