As I move forward with mods an auto would be great for track time (if it can be built for the power). I was thinking the 6 spd auto from the CX-7 might be sweet. Anyone know if there's any way in heck it would fit?
:)
The ratios look better to me as well:
Manual transmission ratios:
1st: 3.538
2nd: 2.238
3rd: 1.535
4th: 1.171
5th: 1.085
6th: 0.853

6-speed electronically controlled sport automatic transmission ratios:
* 1st: 4.148
* 2nd: 2.370
* 3rd: 1.555
* 4th: 1.154
* 5th: 0.859
* 6th: 0.685
* Reverse: 3.393

I looked at this some more concerning the double final drive ratio. The CX-7 even has a steeper 3.749 final drive ratio as well and a deeper 6th to compensate.
2682 RPM in 6th for the CX-7 Auto/Final drive combo with 245/35-19's vs 2984 RPM with the stock setup for 80 MPH cruising
The CX-7 Auto/Final drive combo would also mean a the top speed of (at 7K RPM):
1st - 34.49
2nd - 60.36
3rd - 91.99
4th - 123.96
5th - 186.36
6th - 233.70 (not gonna happen :) )
vs the stock setup of:
1st - 38.46
2nd - 60.80
3rd - 88.65
4th - 116.21
5th - 147.54
6th - 187.67

Just some fun figures.

custom gearing would be optimal, max out the ratios with a top speed of 140 or so in 6th, you'd be blazing through those gear, acceleration would be supercar like at that point.

I bet it would fit. The problem will be shifting it. Its fully controlled by the ECU.

doesnt an atx require different gear ratios? and dont forget that the thing accelerates from 0-60 in something like 8 seconds.

The atx would use whatever you need, I would just swap out the rear dif with a CX-7 and install the tranny. The CPU from the CX-7 would be required as well unless Cobb could transplant the atx code.
I think the 8 second 0-60 has to do with the way they tuned the CX-7 but only time will tell.

I think the 6sp ATX would be fine as long as you kept the power levels stock. The 6sp ATX is finding its way into the CX-9 with the new 3.5L(260hp??)

I just got a CX-7 for my wife about two weeks ago. I'm not too fond of the sluggish takeoffs. It almost feels like im towing a damned semi-trailer. I'm not sure if its the transmission or the engine. I honestly wouldnt even attempt it, but thats just me.

I think it's the boost thing. My sales guy, not that he'd know a boost from a hole in the ground, said that was why Mazda opted against putting the atx in the MS6, lack-luster performance until you hit 2500+. Though that can be over come with a manual and a clutch, it's hard to pre-rev a atx without powerbraking and burning up your back brakes!

And being the CX7 weighs substantially more, I bet it is sluggish, not to mention 30hp less with the tuning on our MS6 motor in that suv :(

part of which has to do with the fact that it weighs more than the speed6 (just under 4,000 for the AWD cx7) and the fact that its so high off the ground.

and it is a detuned version of our engine also.
