are you talking about the rust that develops directly behind the wheel on the rotor where you can see through the spokes? I guess you could use naval jelly to remove what is there... don't really know how you would prevent it coming back... paint or sharkhide?

Sharkhide

Just don't get any where the pads will be contacting the rotors, that can't be good....

Rotors will always rust if they get wet, the pads will clean off the rust after driving the car. If your gonna store the car outside then you can spray WD40 on the rotors.
If you have rust on other parts of the rotor that the pad doesnt hit then you need to sand most of it off and paint it with a rust killing paint, try to find one thats high temp.

spraying WD40 on your brakes sounds like a bad idea.

on my 6, i just painted the rotors where the pad's dont hit it. did it 3 years ago when i did my calipers. and still looks great. just remember. the more work you put into the prep, the longer and better it will look. i even painted my dust shield. lol

Yep, starting to notice some rust on my slotted rotors, around the hub area. Very typical on most rotors. One of these weekends I need to get to prepping/painting them.

After a damp day, the rotors will rust. Just drive & brake, the rust will magically disappear.

If you are talking about a cocentric (inner) ring of rust that may form after putting on a new pair of rotors ... that's because the brake pad does not completely capture the entire surface area of the rotor. I've tried in the past to apply caliper paint on it - but they chipped away especially on hot summer days. So I'm resigned to having a small section of rust.

Yep, that small section on the outer edge of the rotor....I am sure if you wanted to get super-detailed about it you could hit that area as well while painting. As QuickSilver6 said, best bet would probably be to use a good high-temp spray.

In my experience, caliper paint, for the most part, sucks.

I can say that I have had decent luck with the G2 paint on the MS6. No chips after almost 3 years, but I think it has a lot to do with the OEM wheels.

The MS6 wheels have many spokes - not much open area for debris to get in between and chip the paint on the calipers.

http://forum.mazda6club.com/mazdaspeed6/238060-open-wheels-oem-rotor-rust-saturday-morning.html

I replaced my rotors with some that are both Zinc plated and have painted hubs. Problem solved.

Prior to that, I also had the OEM rotors rust so bad you could see it from several car lengths away. Took a morning quite some time ago & painted the hubs and took pictures while I was at it.

I took a look at those old rotors just last night- painted part still looks awesome, tho the contact portion looks like a science experiment now as they've just been sitting in an old truck bed in my back yard getting rained on ever since I swapped to different rotors.
