ok - this CEL usually means gas cap is loose, correct?

I always turn my cap 3x when I seal it to make sure it's done - do the seal's go bad on these caps?

(grumble) I have to have the car smogged within 3 weeks!

Sounds like a gas cap leaking a little bit. I did my emissions test about 1 year ago and failed, no CEL or any hint of anything wrong. Turned out my gas cap "wasn't sealing properly" according to the emissions tech. I drove straight to the dealer, and purchased a new cap for $25 (rip-off, but I didn't have the time to look for a better deal as I had to get it done). I went back to the emissions testing, and it tested good and I passed. By the way, they took the cap off, and just hooked it up to a tube to test for leaks. Look online or your nearby auto store and see if you can get a better deal than I did. Replace your cap and you should be good to go.

I got a new cap today, how long till the CEL goes away?

Remove the negative cable from your battery and let it sit for about 1 hour. Hook it back up and the code will be cleared. If it comes back you obviously have another issue.

i'll have to drive another 100 miles or so to reset the computer then - correct?

I don't know how long a cycle is for our car, but I believe you are correct that it would be around 100 miles or so.

whew! ok - so I finally got a new gas cap, and let the car run 100 miles - it passed today!
