Does anyone know if the MP3 player will be available as future upgrade if someone gets the Bose package since that package has 6-disc in-dash changer?

Ordering mine before end of month... just don't want to get screwed out of the MP3 player.

Same here, I would love to have the MP3 Option. Just think one disc that can hold as much as 10 cd's vs. a choice of one of 6 cd's. Easy Decision. If we can add the mp3 player later, I will probably be doing the same. Hopefully the 6-disc changer can be swapped out easily (and hopefully someone will want to buy it from me) :)

I don't care about the 6 disc changer; just would want BOSE for better sound / speakers.

But have been thinking about just getting standard stereo and having a car audio shop put in good system aftermarket.

Has anyone gotten a price for the MP3 deck yet? (Or God forbid an S-Plan Price)

I am seriously trying to decide whether to buy the indash and try to sell my 6-disc changer or just to get an Ipod or Creative Nomad ZEN or an IRiver 350 and run that through the Cassette deck. (At least then I have a portable player as well)

UGH!

This is exactly why im hoping by the time the hatch comes out someone will have the dash kit available so I can put my 12gb Empeg Mp3 Player in the car...

MP3 deck retail is $380. Mine's on order and should be in before the end of the month.

No idea if it can be connected in series with the Bose stuff. My initial thought was to get the Bose equipment and swap in the MP3 head unit, but since I couldn't confirm that they were compatible (man, the car industry is frustrating when you're coming from the high-tech hardware world); I went with the stock unit. Didn't want to waste the money on the Bose if it wouldn't work.

So my plan is to get the MP3 head unit in, and unless my speakers sound miraculously better after they're broken in, take it in to Ye Olde Stereo Shoppe to have an amp and better speakers put in behind it.

Which will end up around the same cost as the Bose, but with better quality. Except if I'd gotten the Bose, I could have resold the 6-disc changer part on eBay, probably, to get some of the $$$ back...

Stew, I have an iPod, and I almost got the Cassette deck too just for that reason. But the sound quality of an iPod going through a cassette deck... bites. Fine for audibook stuff, not so hot for music.

$380...daaaaamn...even at s-plan that would still be close to $300 bux...If I could find a definite buyer for the 6-disc for around that price it just might be worth it (considering the 6-disc retails for $500) The hard part would be getting the 6-disc player sold...sooooo any takers? :)

Maybe DJSCIASCIA could give us some insight from the dealer perspective...like is the mp3 deck swappable with the bose 6-disc changer? and what is s-plan price for the mp3 deck?

So really, the iPod sounds like crap through the cassette deck? I always remeber my old cd-player adapter sounding pretty good...then agian that was in an 88 1/2 Ford Escort EXP with stock speakers...

If you thought a CD player through a cassette adapter on an EXP with stock speakers sounded pretty good, you won't mind the quality of the iPod through the cassette deck either. :)

As for the 6 CD changer, I'm sure you could sell it on eBay, or here.

:p Obviously not a Audiophile here :p

I guess I will give my cassette adapter a try before I make any big purchases. If I can handle the sound through it maybe I will go that way.

I still can't believe the unit is $380 retail. I mean, I could go get a Kenwood or a Sony with mp3 support for less than that...and the mazda unit doesn't even have some cool Organic Color display either...owell...we'll see where the chips fall...

Doesn't playing MP3's kinda defeat the purpose of having a good stereo? :p

MP3's sound good on a shit stereo, but they sound shit on a good stereo, go figure :p

That empeg unit was a totally kickass idea, pity that the shitty rio people bought them out and shut them down.

You're not going to get anything in the custom dash though... not at least until someone starts making replacement ones with the DIN.

I just went Bose 6 stacker and started buying audio CD's... it's amazing what a good stereo sounds like with a legit copy :p

And CDRW's are still fine to burn the occasional MP3s to.

Well, I rip my own MP3s at 192K VBR, so the quality is virtually indiscernable from the original CDs in a car environment at that rate. (I'm not talking about pirated music here, but quality rips from my own CDs. The stuff I've downloaded has all been live concert audio that's not available commmercially anyway.)

I also use MP3s a lot for audiobooks, etc., converting content purchased from Audible.com or radio shows recorded off the Internet.

I can tell the difference even at 320K, it really depends on the music though... 192K really doesn't do Nine Inch Nails justice, for example. Too much non-standard frequencies going on in there... even doof doof music can be a bit crappy at 192K with the highhats being compressed etc. Still, each to their own :)

So the 6-disc changer supports CDRWs??? That is great news! That was one big thing I though I was gonna miss from the in-dash. Hell 6 CDRWs is like 7 hrs of music vs. 1 cd is 11 hours of lower quality mp3s...the plot thickens...

All I use are CDRs and my changer works fine. Pretty much ANY decent quality CD player these days will play finalized CDRs. I never bother with CDRWs, though, because hey.... If you look around, you can EASILY get CDRs for free, or close to it (less than 5 cents per); so when I'm tired of a disc, I either give it away or throw it out.
