Best engine mod for the money

2253 Views 25 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  R_sinist
I just got my 2005 Mazda6s Hatch a week ago... I'm looking at getting some rims, so I can't afford too much more. What is the best engine upgrade I can do for the money? Would like to stay under $300... Cold air intake? If so, what brand? What about a chip, if so, what one? If either of those...then what? And what does it do for me? Also, I've gotten up to 115, what is the govenor at? Thanks!

u can get a cold air intake that will throw cel for under 300 (check engine light = bad if u havent figured that out). If not save up for CPE cause its tuned to change the A/F ratio. That is $530 bucks shipped though.

Or get the injen intake + the fix cpe makes which is 150 cheaper i believe (correct me if im wrong)

so Intake or
Cpe engine mount + 175 in other mods which can get u some good small stuff. new white halogens + blue interior lighting + w/e else u decide on. You could also do the air box mod which helps your intake a little and makes it sound deeper & use some of the left over money to get paint for your engine and calipers to help show off your rims.

The effect of the engine mount is some car vibration while in idle, only noticeable to the owner of the car though if u drive it a lot. Other wise u cant tell to much.

searching is very good though.

If you can save up, the CP-E MAFci system is probably your best first engine mod. Really worth the money and the sound and response is awesome!

If you're looking for a freebie, do the airbox mod. I actually did that as my first engine mod and it felt and sounded better. Can't beat the feeling of a CAI, but hey, itz FREE! can't beat that...

Most of the engine mods will get kinda pricey, depending what you wanna do to it. Just my 2 cents. :)
I have no idea what a CP-E MAFci system is... How do you do the air box mod?

Sorry about that, I definitely could have done that :) Thanks though! Looks like it doesn't take too long to do? I might go do it today!
Just go straight with the CP-e! It's the only way to go with the V6. theRPMstore!
If you get the CPE MAFci you don't do the air box mod?

Also, does the airbox mod affect gas milage? What about the MAFci?
the MAFci is a cold air intake. it replaces the factory airbox. Neither one will affect gas mileage that much. You'll most likely lose ~1-2 mpg
how is this CAI so much better than others? I mean you get find some for $150 or even less...
i won't even offer my option as people like to jump on my back about it , so i'll go with the crowd, get the CP-e MAFci.
Meaning...you think others are almost as good?
The MAFci was engineered and proven (by CP-e and members on this forum) to increase hp, and tq. It will give you the most gains out of any intake for the Mazda6. Go to the search option, and search it, I'm sure you'll find many tech and opinion threads about it.

i have no proof to back up my prediction but yes that is my though. i'll have spent under 320 shipped for everything which is 210 less than the CP-E. i've never said it nor will i that this setup will be better than the CP-e, but i'm willing to bet it'll be within 1-3hp of it.

Have you done the install yet??? I installed the injen over the weekend but did not get time to do the A/F customizer. I had the airbox mod and maybe notice a small difference but I dont think it is anything, hoping to really see it once the MAF customizer is hooked up, which i am with you in thinking that the actual CAI is of nominal importance, but CPE's customizer is where its at.
no it's on order but still at cp-e. i ordered through RPM and my only complaint is they don't mention on the website that they don't stock them in house, so i'm waiting on cp-e to actually ship my item. whether or not it'll go from cp-e to rpm then to me i don't know but if that's how it's happening that sucks. if it is going from cp-e directly to me, then i'd like a refund on paying for tax lol. i live in state so i'm charged tax from rpm but if the item is coming direct from cp-e i'd think i shouldn't be charged for that, know what i mean?
If you want a CAI for under $300 then get the AEM or Mazdaspeed one. Even though they have the possibility of throwing a CEL many owners have had no CEL issues with these intakes.

Injen will give you more power than the AEM or Mazdaspeed but will throw a CEL.

If you are worried about your car's warranty the Mazdaspeed is a safe CAI to get.
