Does anybody know how to remove the cover at the shifter so I can see if there are bulbs to replace. Local (new), Mazda Dealer tod me that the lights that show P, R, N, D, M; are part of the assembly which cost's over $300.00 to replace. I cannot believe that Mazda Engineers are so stupid as to build a shift control unit w/o replaceable lights. However, I cannot figure out how to remove the housing to look inside.

There are bulbs to replace. Search for 10 seconds and find a DIY for removing the center console.
:search: once you get to the shifting console you'll notice that there are a few wires hanging off of it. the front two are taped together and those are the cig. power and light for the ashtray. the rear two are the shifting lights. just pop the holders out and you'll see the tiny bulbs.

It's easy to replace the light bulbs that are in there. The console comes apart with no tools whatsoever.

Heck, for $300 I'll do it for you.
