Wheels Magazine in Australia has announced the COTY - the BA Ford Falcon.
Mazda6 came second.
Toyota Camry...miles behind :)
When I read the full article, I will post a summary, if interested.

Please give us the Aussye version of what actually happened in Europe ... got second after that nice, original ... but still far from the 6 ... Renault Megane 2.
And it was so close ... such a pitty, because with this award ... the winner takes it all.
All the press releases are talking about Renault Megane 2 - 95% of the article - and just a phrase about the Mazda6 which was so close (almost half of the "referees" saw it No.1).

Good point but still it is good to know that the specialists ... and I'm talking here about guys doing this (comparing cars) for a living ... also recognized the qualities of this car.

Please have a look at:
http://www.caroftheyear.org/pages/Voting03.htm
Mazda6 lost only by 20 points but there were a few strange things that really got my attention:
Making subtotals for big countries its very easy to notice that they've lost this contest on GB's hand!!!
It's something fishy about it ... all the rest of the Europe consider it to be No1 maybe No2 but none of them consider it the LAST of the seven as englishmen did. Is it the right hand one so bad. Or Mazda couldn't provide them with a right hand one for tests and they've tried to penalize this??!?
Holland and Italy also was very critical about the 6 ... making it loose 18 points with each. But at least for Italy it was 4/7 while for Holland was again almost the last one 6/7 :sarc :sarc :sarc
BTW 2 of the Swedish reviewers weren't very thrilled about 6 also ... but at least it was the 2nd car ;)
For France was somehow normal to vote their car :p
I guess that this award has also to do with a lot of lobying ... and Renault was obviously better in this. Renault is an European company!!! and it is producing all over Europe (France, Spain, Turkey) while Mazda is not.
YET? I've understood that Mazda2 will be produced in Europe, I guess in UK (so maybe brits try to fine Mazda for not bringing the 6 to UK plants??!?)
Waiting for your comments ...

Ford Falcon is good in every technical aspect except the look is a bit cheap and it's being used as taxi in Australia! so the image of Ford is like a cheap Taxi! also it has only V6 and V8 which drink a lot of petrol and is not economic to run. The Tubocharged version cost as much as a BMW 318i, although BMW is a weaker car, but I think I would spend the money on the BMW.

I think most of us here would rather spend the money on a BMW or something looks better,Lexus IS, Honda Accord! doesnt care if it is COTY.

Ford is Ford, BMW is BMW Merc is Merc, the image never changes in people's mind! who would buy a Ford intead of a BMW!

I think that something stinks in UK!?

Anyways, well done FINLAND. 7 against 5 for Mazda6 not bad... Unfortunately we can only have one person in votes. :(

Because in Finland Mazda6 has won all the reviews it has been in last year. No matter what car has been put against it. :)

ONE MORE DAY for mine by the way ;)

I've read somewhere that they want to start producing the '6 at Ford in Spain sometime next year.

Maybe I shouldn't comment that since I know some Spanish... But hey - they don't read this forum - right?

I would trust Japanese workers and quality over Spanish any given day. That is what makes Mazda still so special ,it is the only Japanese car brand which you can get in Europe "made in Japan". That makes it more costy ofcourse (import, customs, etc. all kinds of extra costs).

If Mazda6 would say "Made In Spain", I would most likely consider another car... That is how big difference it can make.

I have no experience with anything made in Spain, so I cannot really comment on that. But I'm glad that my '6 is being produced at a Mazda plant, not a Ford one.

I think the results with the "Europe car of the year" contest has a bit of politics involved. I think they don't dare to give the Europe's title for the car developed in Japan. So probably the results are not so objective...

You guys are not instilling positive feeling for Mazda 6 not made in Japan. Because our NA Mazda 6 are made from a Ford plant that was almost shutdown. Mind you that this plant got a total makeover by Japanese Mazda engineer. They came in and did a total job on it.

But it is still a Ford plant so you telling me you would not buy the car because it is made by Ford?

No no no, don't get me wrong. All I said was I'm "glad" mine is coming from a Mazda plant. I would still have bought it if I had known it was coming from a Ford plant. :D

I don't have any first hand experience with Ford. It's just stuff I read and stuff Ford owners are telling.

Apparently they have much improved with the Mondeo, at least here in Europe.

Mine is made in Japan, so no problems on that. :)

If it was made in USA... well... ahem.... I better not continue. ;)

I'm so curious how would all thoses british Car? reporters justify all those 1 and 2 marks given to the 6. Like ...
- it's too big
- the suspension is not sporty enough and not confortable at all
- interior is ugly
- who wants the radio/CD and Cruise controls on the wheel?
- those small front headlights and those "imitating" round back stoplights
Should I go on ... :p

Yeah, that would be really nice to know.

Since most them thought that Citroen C3, Honda Jazz and Ford Fiesta are better than Mazda6 !?!?!!!!??!!?

I can never buy that.

Yeah the British press are a bit bizzare. Take a look at the www,autotrader.co.uk review. They score the 6 a near perfect 10 in almost every category then give it a 3 or 4 overall. What gives?!?

I think that Renault thing is pretty much the ugliest thing on the road. If an ugly tax was put on them no one could afford to drive one.

No need. Noone WANTS to drive one anyway...:p

Besides, they could need this award to help balance up the disadvantage of the increadibly ugly design...:sarc
