I have a 96 miata and had a 95 millenia before. Now I have an 09 mazda 6. It is dues for rear brakes and apparently there is still no repair manual out for this model. Are there any surprises when changing the rear brakes? It looks different from the miata and millenia and I'm hesitant to start without some kind of reference. Is there someone who has posted a step by step rear brake change? Google can't find one so I thought I would try here. Thanks!

i remember hearing, but haven't looked, but the parking mech. is on the spindle/hub rather than the caliper. there is quite literally no difference in the work you would perform in either case though. the tools/sizes are different, but from miata to my 6 to my mini...it's all the same.

Thanks. That's good news. Do you know if this caliper is supposed to be compressed, or if it has that hex nut to retract the piston? On the miata it had a hex screw to retract the piston. It was hidden under a small bolt that had to be unscrewed first. The millenia I think required me to compress the piston.

you will need the tool to screw the caliper piston back into the caliper. avail at any autoparts store. iirc the rotors have a screw on them that needs to be taken out. everything is normal other than that.

yeah, no hex like the miata (which took me a long while to figure out when i worked on the miata), just push and rotate. i used needlenose for a years as my ghetto tool, but the little cube tool only costs a few bucks now so i'd recommend it in your toolbox.
