Timing guide -- you mean the timing chain tensioner/guide? Well that's a first from what I've heard of on these engines but there's always a first for everything... that'll do it though.
Usually when timing chains and components in the path go they give you plenty of warning first (and some nasty-sounding noises), but not always. That's one advantage you USUALLY have over a belt, which typically fails with zero warning (thus the requirement to do them on-interval.) I've seen several oil pump drive chain tensioner failures over the years but most of those are on engines well beyond 200k miles, but it's not something that is usually much of a concern in the timing path.
Glad you got a diag on what caused it -- sounds like a random bad part thing and likely nothing you could have done about it.

I thought my used 6 horn function just didn't work or I needed to set it up as some option. Recently it worked a couple of times, then nothing for maybe a month, and now that it's warmer out it's sounding the horn more often when I lock the doors, so this seems to be an intermittent problem. I...
Recently got my 2015 6
The audio isn't bad but I'm lacking some bass and clarity.
I plan to sound deaden all 4 doors and trunk lid (50-60$)
Also thought about replacing the door speakers while I'm there with the deadning.
Front components: Hertz dsk165.3 (tweeter on top of the door...
I would like to know if the Extended Warranty is worth it on the Mazda 6. I'm planning on picking up a 2019 in a few weeks. This has been a no-brainer in the past for me, but the Mazda is different. For one, I've heard nothing but horror stories about Mazda service dealerships in general. I have...
