For those interested, the NA Mazda6 has a bolt pattern of 5-114 and a offset of 50. That will limit our wheels choices in less there is a way to reduce the offset. Anyone know much about offsets?

The offset is of the rim. You can fit down to a +45 offset, at least. You might be able to go with a rim with offset of +41 or 43. This is not counting if you drop you ride.

Ie: My Protege came with rims that were +50 offset [as are most Mazda rims] but I dropped mine 2 inches and went with a rim that was +38. It was fine. No rubbing on cornering or with many passengers.

Thats good to know. I really want to put so 17inch SSR integrals on, they are basically a more conservative version of the SSR GT1. The big offset they have for the integrals in a 45. Does that require spacers? Is that safe?

+45 offset will be safe if it's a 7 or 7.5" width. Any wider and it will rub. Spacers and it will stick out of the wheel wells. Thus throwing off the entire line of the car.

I can surely see the concern about rubbing when fiddling with offsets, but isn't the suspension/steering geometry more important factor here. If you use wheels with incorrect offset, doesn't it put more pressure on bushgings, bearings etc., not to mention total change to the driving feel, up to the point when it's just plain unsafe?

I had talks about this with my tyres specialists... for my winter wheels / alloys.
I have to check what was it all about again they said, will get back on this in day or two.
But if I am not mistaken offset 43 is "so and so", shouldn't go lower than that. But as I said, I have to check this myself. The biggest problem is that most wheels are lower than that, and that makes selection more less?

Yeah those offsets of 45-50 will have no problems. Steve you're talking about negative offsets for rear wheel drive applications. Ie: You can get 10" wide rims for an M3 which will stick way out of the wheel well. That's what's illegal in many places. But looks so damn good with a widebody kit.

Yes, but also positive offset has a limit where it's no longer legal. But I agree negative offset has a charm to it. Especially on a car that already has quite a large footprint - like the 6.
