Ford, BMW, Honda and Volkswagen are in process of making a pact with the California Air Resources Board to work towards bypassing the 2021 CAFE freeze initiated by the Trump Administration and to work towards more fuel efficient vehicles. As part of the tentative deal, fuel economy and corresponding greenhouse emissions would improve 3.7% every model year from 2022 to 2026. The 4 automakers would also be eligible for various credits based on adopting proven technology not yet mandated by the EPA (such as start-stop tech) as well as hybrid and hydrogen alternatives.

Here's what's next. CARB will start penalizing any automaker by 2022 that doesn't join in on this little pact. I hate California's arrogance.

Looks like these automakers already had plans to improve MPGs this much and they want to get in the state govt's good graces before the rest of the pack. They might have even planned to increase MPGs even more than this and now they can take their sweet time, get perks and exemptions, AND appear environmentally conscious at the same time.
