The factory stereo is unimpressive and I may have reached the point of wanting to upgrade. Crutchfield tells me no upgrades for the head unit, just speakers.

Got any recommendations for vendors or specific speakers? I don't need super loud or audiophile quality, but the factory system sounds like my father's Oldsmobile. From when I was in high school.

Quick search on Crutchfield:
Front corner - $30 on sale - https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206CSC354/Kicker-43CSC354.html
Front door - $53 - https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206CSC654/Kicker-43CSC654.html
Rear door - lists 6 1/2" and 6 3/4" speakers? Above or https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206CSC674/Kicker-43CSC674.html
(Not insistent on Kicker. Figure they are 'good enough' and good value. Other options?)

Anything complicated regarding installation?
Are there subwoofers?
Thanks!!

Here, check this thread if you haven't as yet. I plan to install a set of JBL club 3020s with bass blockers just in the dash as soon as it thaws out long enough, so I can't tell you how it sounds unfortunately. Need to still pickup some interior removal tools as well. Till then, I found that playing with the bass/treble settings and fading one notch to the back and using good quality mp3 files on a USB does the trick for now.

Regarding to the door speaker install, I hope you have the patience & tools to swap those out. easily 3-4 hour job from start to finish if you're reusing the stock speaker mounts.
You will need to retro fit them for aftermarket 6.5 speakers. Dremel (Cutting wheel), soldering Iron, Power drill, RTV needed. I particularly didn't enjoy this install prior to many past installs I've done.
