So my car has 51,835 miles on it, bought it pre-owned with about 44,000 on it in March, beautiful condition, well cared for...well it suddenly started kicking hard while stopped in traffic, once pulled over I shifted to Park, then Drive, huge kick...at 55mph stepped on gas hard to accelerate to 70...revs shot past 5,000 and no acceleration..so I backed off...i figured transmission was failing... dealer in Farmington Hills Michigan confirmed that... so disappointing but thankfully it will be covered under 60000 mile powertrain warranty... anyone else have a transmission fail this soon?

Sorry to hear about the failure - I've only heard of a single other person on here having issues so soon. :(

It's good that Mazda is going to cover it, but it's not good that it failed; that sounds like a torque converter failure although with modern highly-electronic transmissions an electrical problem can easily cause a failure like this within seconds to minutes, so the root cause may never be known.

Of course...i've had several "firsts" with cars in my lifetime..but my 2006 Mazda 6 lasted 211,000 miles before needing a transmission.

You got very lucky you were still under powertrain warranty!

I've been seeing other reports of transmission failures on 3rd gen:

https://www.carcomplaints.com/Mazda/MAZDA6/2015/transmission/ - 5 reports on 2015

https://www.carcomplaints.com/Mazda/MAZDA6/2016/transmission/ - 7 reports on 2016
https://www.carcomplaints.com/Mazda/MAZDA6/2017/transmission/ - 1 report on 2017

Certainly makes me nervous about my 2017 - and I drive only about 7-8K miles per year, so my powertrain will expire based on time before I hit the max miles, meaning it will fail outside warranty.
