I already posted a bit in the newbie section, but to rehash:

I decided to it was time to trade up one of my cars to a wagon. I'm a pretty big SR20 fan and since college outside of about 2 years since then I've always had at least one (and still do). I had been bombing around on the weekends in 2000 Infiniti G20 and in the past couple of years I've noticed I had been doing a lot more fishing and other outdoor activities (u-pick fruits, long trips etc). The G20 was not quite cutting much cargo wise....I could barely fit my ice chest in the trunk (it just squeezed in). I'm not a huge fan of SUVs, and always been a sedan/coupe kind of guy so I set out for a wagon. I had never had a Toyota before so I set out to look for one, but the wagon selection from them is scarce...I did find a Lexus IS sportcross in my budget but sold before I got to it. Next up was a Protege5/Mazda3 and just couldn't find anything I liked or I did not get responses from the listings...so while waiting I made a generic search of 'wagon' in craigslist and to cut the story short, here I am :)

Car info:

- '07 Sport Value Edition
- Automatic
- 141,XXX miles
- Tungsten Grey Metallic
- 1 owner

So I bought my car knowing it had engine issues. I paid $1500, which might of been high after a few searches here. It had a bunch of CELs, EGR, misfire cyl #1 , and few others I can't remember. It blew smoke at start up, but still ran ok. The previous owner was trying to keep up with the maintenance, as some of the coil packs were relatively new. Shocks were replaced, brakes 80%, water pump new and a few other things. I did have some maintenance records that showed it overheated once and oil lamp turned on, so that was enough for me.

So bought a few things to swap the engine and 'while I'm in there' stuff

- '07 Fusion engine with 97k
- Nautilus Performance modified MSDS headers
- Accel Mustang coil packs (cheapest option I found)
- Bunch of gaskets ans seals
- PCV valve
- thermostat
- water pump and belt
- NGK sparkplugs
- front suspension/steering rebuild parts
- Wheel bearings
- other things I've forgotten to mention

Cool Mazda accessories I picked up:
- Mazdaspeed Sway bar kit (not speed6)
- Mazda cargo area carpet & rubber cargo tray
- Mazda cargo net
- Mazda All weather floor mats
- Complete Mazda remote start kit I bought for $32 lol

Audio/Visual
- Metra Double DIN kit (damn thats pricey!)
- Alpine Type-R & Type-s speakers (pull outs from my G20)
- Kenwood Navi (pull outs from my G20)
- 4 Channel RF Amp (pull outs from my G20)
- Massive audio monoblock for ID 12v3 12" sub (pull outs from my G20)

Current status:
Running with '08 Milan auto trans. So far so good. Tracking down some fluid leaks.
Nav works, but no speakers yet. Coilovers showed up, should be installing soon!

12/22~12/24

So I set my sights on getting the engine removed from the car this holiday weekend. Spent a solid 8 hrs on Saturday (8-4), 5 hours on Sunday (8-1) and another 8hrs today (5:30-11:30).

Got the subframe & motor out on Sunday:

In the intake manifold, cyl #1 had a lot of what I think is precat particles. Doesn'r show in the photos well though. #1 was the worst, but #2 and #3 had some too.

Looks like the floor pans support AWD?

How I left it:

I had a real hard time with the driver side axle and balljoints. Absolute nightmare....I ended up pulling the knuckle out with the forward arm and axle attached. I used heat, hammer and a large 3 jaw to try get the axle out but just broke the puller. It was harbor freight so no surprise. I will probably end up buying a heavy duty puller and get serious.

That;s all for now. Next weekend, I plan to break down the engine and swap over to the Fusion motor. I don't have pictures, but last weekend I tore that motor done already, so it just needs the Mazda bits.

Good stuff!

Question, is it me or do those headlights need some polishing?
Yep they are yellowed & fine cracks in them. I do have some new lens coming, and I was planning on updating the optics at the same time :wink2:

Nothing super crazy, but was planning on swapping out the projector with a Morimoto Mini H1 from retrofit source.

Yep lot's going on and probably a few things I forgot to mention. Gonna be a busy next few weeks. Yup Ford Fusion engine is going in, hopefully by the 1st week of Jan. The headers are taking some time to get here....

Wondering why you'd go with a Ford Fusion engine, could you share based on what you have chosen to swap the Mazda engine with that?

I'll chime in on this one. Can't speak for certain why the OP wanted to go that route but I have an idea why I would.

Two words: price and availability.
The Fusion Duratec V6 is usually a quarter the price of the "Mazda" Duratec V6 and I would argue 20x more common. With the exception of a few ancillary items they are identical.

Looks like its coming along nicely, is it just me or does that tensioner and PS pump look new?

Yep DrFeelGood hit the nail on the head. After I did some research here about the engine symptoms I had, I found out about the Fusion option. I picked mine up for $400, where as the absolute cheapest Mazda version I found was $1000~

I wasn't afraid of parts swapping & figured either 10 year motor needed the associated gaskets/seals changed, so it was a no brainer for me.

I don't think the PS pump is new, but the belt tensioner, idler and belt are new. I swapped them out while I was trying to figure out (confirm) the racket I had going on under the hood. The tensioner was certainly making at least 50% of noise I heard initially but, alas, my motor had more problems in store.

Looking forward to updates!!! Huzzah for saving another long top.

I second that. I was talking with @blackerphotos and brought up the notion of a "saved a 1st gen." badge or something akin to recognition for keeping one of these old disappearing dogs on the road. I have no idea if this is even reasonable or if the community would tolerate it but maybe it is something I could run by @Byakuya

@hurddawg, That looks great - and it doesn't appear you've been met with much in the way of crazy frustration...so far, and like @waughoo, I'll be watching as your swap progresses. I've owned my 2004 wagon since early September and (touches wood, taps head, etc...) I've 'only' had to replace both exhaust manifolds, the two main cats, the flex pipe and all four O2 sensors. In truth I only had codes for the firewall precat and one O2 sensor but on excellent advise from the great membership here, I replaced all of it at once.

As @DrFeelGood says, we chatted about some sort of badge of recognition for fighting the good fight and putting extended life into these increasingly rare cars; I've only seen two since I bought mine; one was an hour and a half away and the other hasn't moved out of a nearby driveway in a couple of months.

If this badge idea goes forward, you should definitely qualify!

I'd love that idea too. Thanks for the props everyone, its a nice motivation booster :)
I've only seen 1 wagon and that was around the time I bought my car...since then only a handful of sedans and hatches. I sure do see a lot of new 3rd gens though. It's unfortunate to think how many 6's have possibly headed to the crusher due to failed PCVs and pre-cats:(

I agree @burddawg would definitely qualify. It could be a nomination style badge where the community puts forward possible recipients. IDK.

Speaking of @burddawg , nice garage to work in there...

@RobertD Has been PMing me about reviving the 6Club stickers as he owns a vinyl business. Perhaps he can chime in if he'd like to take on the task of making these vinyls.

If I ever get any free time I could always mock up some ideas for designs as well.

i definitely will be doing these. "if i ever get any free time" is my issue as well. my goal is to start a thread and start producing these first week of the new year. if anyone wants something they design instead i can cut .ai .eps. .svg .cdr files. inkscape is free to play with. i still want to tweak the design a little. i just used a font i noticed Byakuya mentioned in an old thread, and i don't like the 'B' in club, the holes look too small or something

right now i have the midas touch at work. i have 34 letters to make by hand which is making templates, cutting them out by hand with a 1940's craftsman scroll saw, painting the edges with gold, covering the faces with gold size, waiting 12 hours, and covering them with real 23kt gold. once that is complete i'll be making a a pattern and installing them above a church stage. i have until noon on new years eve to finish. jugggling that with a few other projects. (and burning my free time with my new mazda addiction.)
