MS 6 36000 MILES NO MODIFICATIONS

We have put about 1000 miles on the MS6 - Purchased as my wife's Daily Driver.

Just wanted to post this for informational purposes - may help some other soul, i guess...

Symptoms:

-Idle hunting / really bad studder /jerky driving / hesitation on acceleration up to about 2800 RMP's. After 3000 RPM's A.O.K. This just happened out of the blue. There was no progression in the symptoms. Felt like a gorilla was trying to gang you as you are driving along.

Diagnosis (117.00 USD) :

Front / Upstream Oxygen sensor failure. Per Dealers Write-up:
" Vehicle surges under light acceleration. Dealer scanned for codes, found no faults stored in system. Checked engine sensor values VIA IDS Datalogger, found O2 waveform looks abnormal. Disconnected O2 Sensor to cancel input to PCM. Re-Drove Vehicle and now drives normal. Recommend replacement of O2 Sensor as first step in repair. "

Repair (210.64 USD) :

Purchased O2 Sensor From Dealer for DIY remove / install - was in stock - no waiting - The American way, Right? Anyways, Rented O2 socket removal tool from Autozone. Pulled intercooler cover, removed battery and tray, unplugged 2 (Black and Grey) sensor connectors located underneath battery tray. UnClipped and Untrained wire. Started car, let run for 10 minutes to warm up O2 Sensor and Exh. bung, Turned car off and hit it with PB Blaster (This stuff is really magical / mystical SH*t). Put The socket on and broke free the O2 sensor, let cool and get an additional eighth of a turn. Repeated this sequence about 8 times (one cold beer while waiting for manifold to cool per cycle) gaining about an eighth of a turn on each heat and cool cycle until she finally freed up completely. Replaced with Mazda Part L3M6-18-8G1F. Anti-Seize comes pre-applied to threads. Screwed in new sensor, retrained wire, clipped up connectors, battery back in, cover on.

100+ miles and everything is all good. Wife is happy.

Final Thoughts:

I researched the issue before I took the car to the dealer - Had a pretty good idea of what the problem was via Mazda 6 Club and other forums, but purchased an extended warranty, and wanted to "test" out the coverage
on the warranty. They do not cover Emissions Parts or Diagnostics. I do give them kudos for pinpointing the problem in an efficient manner - they were helpful in this respect. They also got my $$.

So, if you are having this problem with your MS6, save your hard earned Benjamins, order the part from RockAuto for 163.00 USD, and replace your O2 sensor. Happy Motoring... :)

If it was originally bought in '06, the warranty would be up by now.
