My 2009 Mazda 6S has been rock solid since I bought it new, not a single unscheduled repair in 121,000 miles.

As others have reported, my first indication of a water pump problem was a small puddle of antifreeze under the car leaking about 8 ounces of coolant off per day. The V-6 water pump is driven by the timing chain and is internal to the engine. Engine oil looked fine so I stopped driving it rather than risk contaminating the crankcase with coolant. Normally I perform all my own maintenance but the V-6 water pump replacement instructions recommend the engine be removed so I was way over my head.

My local independent wouldn't touch it once he realized he would have to pull the engine. Next I paid a visit to a import specialist, he recommended changing all the timing chain components as long as the engine was out. His quoted price was $3,100 - ouch! So it was off to my local Mazda dealer for his estimate. He quoted me $1,850 plus tax/shop fees for just the water pump. We decided to do the timing chain/tensioner while we had the engine out.

Items Replaced:

Water Pump
Timing Chain
Coolant Change
Oil/Filter Change

Total Cost including shop fees and VA tax was just under $2,000.

Thanks for the info.

It's looking more and more that if my water pump goes on my 6, that'll be it for me. I just sunk over $2K to replace the (early, unexpected, and unheard of at such low miles) front subframe, not to mention that I was without it for over 6 weeks!

Since I'm knocking on 120K miles myself, it looks like the timing of the 2018 6 with the turbo may be impeccable...

Placing an engine component with a rotating seal in such a place that when it fails it requires removing the engine to replace it, never mind the other side of that seal being into the engine oil, is outrageous.

Water pumps are wear items.

My beloved 2009 6GT bit the bullet last Saturday at 126k, no warnings, no lights and the coolant system was service June 2017 at 107K by Mazda. All the coolant was pushed into the oil and the head gasket blew. This engine got religious OCI of 4k with quality oils. I would say if you are over 100K get it all done or trade it in ASAP.

I begged for $1000 on trade in

I am in touch with a lawfirm about filing a class action lawsuit related to these engine failures. Anyone who has had this issue, let me know, especially if your car had under 100k miles when it failed!

You are unlikely to get anywhere with a lawsuit.

These are wear items folks. 100k miles for a water pump is reasonable. But I don't like designs that require changes "or else."

Of course timing belts are the same sort of deal on interference engines. Change them on the required interval "or else".

It would have been better if the manual specifies the interval when to replace the said "wear items".

I don't remember reading that you have to replace the water pump at a certain odometer reading or perhaps I missed it.

It just is coloquially known that often a wtr pump gives-out at abt 100,000 miles. Having said this it is wise to release the accessory belt tension and feel the pulley rotational smoothness / bearing action and axial/radial play at interval and to check the weep hole at interval as well and then to pre-emptively change it out depending on these tests' results.
