This is currenlty a test as i figure out what works and what doesn't. i'm not a big fan of huge DIY sections that you have to search through several pages of things to find what you want. So here's my current thought, similar to the Performance Thread that Rains did, what if we had a single post pinned in the various section, and that 1 post would contain links to the DIY's? many DIY's are reffered to often, but seldom posted in after the initial praise of said DIY has passed, so a link would allow those threads to fall back in history if no one posts, but the link will always be stickied and easy to find?

This popped up as i saw a good writeup about the Speed6 hubs, but the stickies in the Speed section already take up more than 1/2 of the first page.

I will be working on this over the course of the next couple weeks, so please, if anyone has any good howto's from a while back that i can link to, please post the link. i'll work on compiling some if i can't find them, and pulling some from the old 6tech info should be easy as well.

i spend most of my time in here, so i'm starting in here, if it goes well, then i'll see about other area's, as there are a lot of how to's/DIY's floating around. any comments or info, feel free to post.

example: title/link and then a description?

TB Coolant Bypass
How to on how to reroute the coolant around the Throttle body, keeping TB temps lower.

Advanced Timing Mod
Adance timing for smoother revs and a bit more pep

VTCS Removal
Removes butterfly valves from intake manifold, providing less restriction through the intake track

Cleaning your MAF sensor
Simple, cheap fix if you have a few miles on your 6 and are experience odd idle issues or hesitation in acceleration

Spin-on Filter conversion
For those that want to do their own oil, but frustrated with that stupid cartridge filter. Swap with parts from the Mazda3i.

Balance Shaft Delete (BSD)
How to remove the 18lb hunk of metal Mazda designed onto our engine but we think we don't need! post #2 in DIY has more info

PCV Removal
Save some $$ at the dealer and replace this very cheap part on your own. Involved job, but not difficult.

ATX Transmission Cooler
Though this is a tranny thing, figured it could work here as well. again, only for the ATX, and the writeup is using a 4spd ATX, but same principal for the 5spd.

Airbox Mod - one of our oldest mods here!
Bit of tweaking to the stock airbox to get a bit more sound from it, free up flow a bit....maybe even a tad of power?! i will be updating this link at some point so the info is on a how-to here, so we don't end up with a dead link for whatever reason if it goes bye bye.

Good idea!

I have PDF versions of most of the 6Tech HowTos (for the 2.3).
This is a Note-to-self/Subscription to remember to host and/or post them here so they can be linked off MrTea's 1st Post.

109K and going strong as the day I bought mine :)

i think the pdf versions were around here somewhere as well, i just need to find them. i am using a backup of the 6tech site to pull things off right now, but i'd like to have pics on our server so they don't disappear as well....so gotta work on that.

but anyone with links to good writeups that might have fallen to the wayside, post them up. i have some from M3F that i'm just going to be copying over to a thread here so people don't have to visit other sites to read the stuff. people can pm/email me suggestions as well if they don't want to post them.

What else?

i'll get to from 6tech eventurally(it takes a long time to get each pictures copied into threads)
oil change one
mtx fluid swap
atx flush
tranny cooler

anything else specific to the 2.3 that we might need? i have the tranny ones just because i figured it would be easy, as i can put them in the tranny section still, but link them on this one (and another if needed)

any on engine mounts? i've done them and none are hard, but having something with what wrenches to use and whatnot might be worth getting? AC recharge? power steering fluid change?

header/exhaust stuff?

i have the tranny cooler one from 6tech, same with the oil change and tranny flush stuff. just takes a while to do all the pictures.

how about the exhaust Biz? you've had like 8 exhaust combo's on there....anything write-up'ish on your side?

hows this working so far? good/bad/whatever? any other projects that a howto would be nice for?

I'm still looking for a good "airbox mod" how-to if anyone knows where one is

does anyone have one for mtx tranny fluid or coolant flush?[/b]
Agreed. Need those two asap!

Also, I read something about changing the transmission filter?? First time I've even heard of such a thing.

there is one on the atx, but not the mtx. last i looked there was nothing available as a replacement, but i haven't looked in 3+ years now. some people were adding additional filters that were servicable as well, not sure if that's what you read?

MTX fluid is usually pretty easy, just involves draining, then opening up a hole and filling using a small pump type tool that attaches to the fluid, or a MacGyver type hose routing to try and gravity fill it. if anyone has a 6 specific one, then put up the link. I have the tech manual and can post that stuff, but i'll be MIA for a couple weeks, so won't be anytime soon.

you could possibly use this to make a .pdf from the pictures, or just post this and tell people to use step 10-12. hope it helped.

damn it to hell, then i noticed that one is to remove the resonator and one is to gut the airbox, both are needed i guess. sorry.

Alright about 2 hours ago I went ahead and grounded the throttle body, removed the resonator, gutted the air box, and advanced the timing with the crank sensor. At first I had a little bit of a rough idle but i figured it was natural since after removing the negative terminal it was learning. So i let it run for about 15 mins before I drove it, and it was still running rough. Took it out to a back road to see what it could do, and the improvement was nice, very smooth shifts, a bit better response, and a beautiful grunt. When I got back into town, where there is alot of stop and go traffic, I hit a stop sign and while I was idling the rpms bogged out then went back up. No biggie, still learning right, nope... about 3 stop signs later it did it again and threw a CEL. So came home and pulled the negative, reset it, got it running again, but still running rough. I did everything correctly, no lose wires or hoses, pushed the crank sensor down, filled up with about 3 gallons of 89 octane, Im stumped. Any advice? Btw, do you need a how to on grounding the TB?

http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2400612 theres the TB ground if you want it.

Could be the airbox mod. Check to make sure the vacuum hose is in properly. One member's vacuum hose was connected but came out where it is meant to connect to the Intake manifold. So check the whole hose.

With advanced timing I noticed that it cancelled out the rough idle that the airbox mod gave me, you may want to try cleaning your MAF sensor as well. Consider that the MAF is responsible for recording air intake data so if the air consumption changes but the sensor is dirty it may become a problem.

Worst case scenario, you ruined your MAF sensor. Did you unplug the battery before touching it? Did you drop it at any stage? Did you touch or knock the amber droplet?

------------

On a side note, I'd like to mention that with the stock airbox mod, the suggestion of using a hammer and flathead screwdriver is the best idea to remove the clips. It saves heaps of time and is insanely effortless.

also, what CEL did you get? that might answer the problem right there ....i'd also imagine it was a lean code, and it's a vacuum issue somewhere.

especially if it runs better at idle at an initial, or colder start, as the raise in rpm's helps keep it running. Once you are temp, just too much unmetered air to deal with at low RPM.

anyhow, post the CEL and we'll see where we can go

Is there a new link available for the airbox mod? It looks as thought all the links are broken or missing images :(
