Car had been making a noise when it is hot outside more and more. dealer said it needs new lower control arms, at a cost of $600! Can you buy them someplace cheaper and do it yourself?

Yeah, I have the same problem for my six and I think it is bogus because I have less than 90k on it. My other cars have never needed suspension parts until well over 100k miles. <<rant off>

The 6 has 2 lower control arms per side up front; the leading one (front) and the trailing one (rear).

I believe they are both available through Rockauto (www.rockauto.com):

You'll need one: Dorman Part # 520809 (Includes Ball Joint and Bushings; Front Right Lower Front) $76.99

and one: Dorman Part # 520890 (Includes Ball Joint and Bushings; Front Right Lower Rear) $61.79

Or similar (make sure you get the right ones).

Plus you will likely need an alignment.

The guy who owned the car before me did the same to the driver side at the dealership and it cost him about $1k total.

Here are a couple of links that might be helpful too:

Replacing Lower Control Arms

Do I really need lower control arms

Good luck!

we ending up having the dealer put them in for $530 for the pair, noise is all gone and the front end feels tight again when driving!
